Adventures

In 2017 I made my third visit to Los Angeles, California. The main objective was to spend quality time with family and celebrate an 80th birthday, or two, but I made sure to take advantage of any down time as an opportunity to revisit Malibu Lagoon State Park and Griffith Park. My goal for this page was to focus on new species that I saw. Of course, I also went to In-and-Out Burger, but those photos may not be appropriate for younger viewers.

Black Phoebe

Malibu Lagoon State Park is one of my favorite places and I made two trips during my LA visit. Once by myself and a second time with my beautiful wife Susan in tow. On my first visit I just happened to pass an old piece of driftwood and saw this beautiful little black phoebe perched and preening in the morning sun.

Western Grebe

On my second visit I hit the jackpot when I stumbled across this gorgeous western grebe in the quiet waters of the lagoon. This bird was moving slowly as it bathed and preened. Then is started fishing, but just happened to stay close enough to me so I could get some great shots of this life bird.

Griffith Park Homerun!

My third expedition was a return to Griffith Park. I avoided the chaos of the Griffith Observatory and focused about 4 hours of time in field in the small courtyard behind the tiny Visitors' Center near the park entrance. Flowers were blooming in picturesque little setting and among them I crossed paths with a male black-chinned hummingbird...another life bird!

Another Life Bird in the Oaks!

Four hours is a long time to watch just one bird, so I gave myself permission to make slow orbits of the pathway that circumnavigated the courtyard. During one pass I happened to notice a movement up in the oak trees and there I found a familiar face. It was a titmouse, but it clearly wasn't one of the tufted titmice that I see so regularly at my feeders back home. This all-gray titmouse turned out to be an oak titmouse and I added yet another life bird to my list.
